SEB celebrating Black History Month
SEB celebrating Black History Month
First launched in the UK in the 1980s, Black History Month is a month of events in October which celebrates the culture, history and achievement of Britain’s African and Caribbean communities.
This celebration was originally founded to recognise the contributions that people of African and Caribbean backgrounds have made to the United Kingdom over many generations. Now, Black History Month is recognised in many countries and has expanded to include the history of not just African and Caribbean people, but black people in general.
As part of Black History Month, this month and beyond, the Society for Experimental Biology will be raising awareness of and celebrating the work, achievements, and contributions of the Black community to the field of biology. We will be running a series of activities including:
- The creation of a timeline of Black scientists who have influenced and shaped the field of biology – we are calling on our members to help us with this by submitting contributions to the timeline. Find out how you can contribute to the timeline here.
- A school activity for teachers and educators to raise awareness of Black biologists who influenced the field with pupils . Find our more and download the resource here.
The SEB is proud to commemorate this Black History Month, as it is by knowing the past that we can shape the future.
Keep an eye on our website and news for all the activities taking place.
We encourage our members to get involved and if you would like to contribute to this please get in touch with us.
