OED1 - Collaborating with Industry: Meeting Life Sciences Sector Skills Needs

Life Sciences is a key sector for economic growth. Access to appropriate skills underpins growth, with entrepreneurship, data handing and green skills growing in importance. We know that industry wants to collaborate with scientists but how best to do this?
Following on from the first Scottish Life and Chemical Skills Summit in September 2023, this session invites you to share case studies, best practice and models for successful scientist-industry collaborations that support design and delivery of effective practical and skills teaching, Continuing Professional Development, upskilling or microcredit provision, highlighting the benefits of a partnership approach.
OED2 - Enhancing Assessment and Feedback in HE Biology Programmes

This session will address the current challenges we face as Biology educators in higher education relating to assessment and feedback.
OED3 - From classroom to community: applied frameworks in action
Session Description
The divide between research and teaching has become increasingly evident in the modern academic landscape. This session seeks to address this divide by exploring innovative frameworks that can be applied to unite these two pillars of academia. We aim to foster a sense of community within and beyond the classroom, ensuring that research is not just a theoretical endeavour but is actively incorporated into the teaching process.
OED4 - Making your scholarship count

Session Description
Scholarship in Learning and Teaching (SOTL) is a topic that is still new to many scientists. However, with the increase in teaching-focused roles, it becomes more and more relevant for career progression. SOTL can take many forms but is usually associated with inquiry that is applied to one’s practice and has demonstrable transferability. This includes for example educational research, curriculum development, and policy making at local or national level. This session aims to discuss the many flavours of SOTL and the various means by which its impact can be evidenced.
OED5 - Establishing, Evidencing and Excelling in Your Teaching Career

Session Description
This workshop will explore how to establish an academic teaching career, how to evidence your teaching activities and how to become an excellent teacher worthy of academic promotion. It is relevant to early career researchers new to teaching, and to junior academics/faculty wanting to evidence their teaching and build a case for promotion or teaching fellowships.
Reward and recognition for teaching and education focussed activity has historically lagged behind that of research. It is often challenging for early career scientists and new faculty members to demonstrate their excellence in teaching and build evidence for promotions or fellowships. This interactive workshop will provide a variety of strategies for establishing and evidencing an academic teaching career, including case studies of successful academics and practical tips. It will also provide delegates with opportunities to network with others wanting to establish their teaching credentials. It will be led by Dr Katharine Hubbard, a Reader in Bioscience Education, National Teaching Fellow and SEB President's Medallist for Education in 2017. Part of the Outreach, Education and Diversity programme
The workshop has the following aims:
- Explore what is meant by excellence in an academic teaching career
- Identify ways to establish an academic teaching career in formal and informal settings
- Provide practical support for evidencing teaching excellence
- Provide networking opportunities for delegates wanting to establish and progress in academic careers on the basis of teaching
OED6 - Using data to address equality gaps in student outcomes
Session Description
The session will seek to provide concrete examples of how data has been used to bridge awarding gaps and improve student outcomes.
OED7 - Creating a Diverse and Inclusive Biosciences Curricula
Session Description
Examination of the traditional bioscience curricula has led to diversification of course content in recent years. Various strategies have been developed to evaluate curricula and progress change within Learning and Teaching practices, to make the university experience more inclusive for both students and staff. Embedding effective approaches around Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will be explored in this session, followed by discussion around good practice in this area.
